How to Calculate Time Duration Between Two Times or Dates

Find the exact duration between any two points in time — in hours, minutes, days, weeks, or a combination. Practical examples for scheduling, planning, and tracking.

The Question Behind Every Schedule

"How long between now and the meeting?" "How many hours until my flight?" "How many days since I started this project?" These are all time duration questions — finding the distance between two points in time.

The complexity depends on the precision you need. The number of days between two dates is simple counting. The exact duration in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds involves calendar math with all its irregularities.

Duration Between Times (Same Day)

For two times on the same day, subtract the earlier time from the later time.

2:30 PM to 6:45 PM:

  • Hours: 6 − 2 = 4
  • Minutes: 45 − 30 = 15
  • Duration: 4 hours 15 minutes

When minutes require borrowing:

10:15 AM to 3:05 PM:

  • 3:05 PM = 15:05 in 24-hour format
  • 15:05 − 10:15: Minutes: 05 − 15 requires borrowing → 65 − 15 = 50 minutes
  • Hours: 14 − 10 = 4
  • Duration: 4 hours 50 minutes

Duration Across Midnight

When the duration spans midnight, add 24 hours to the later time:

11:30 PM to 7:15 AM:

  • 23:30 to 07:15
  • 07:15 + 24:00 = 31:15
  • 31:15 − 23:30 = 7 hours 45 minutes

Duration Between Dates

For two dates, the simplest approach is counting calendar days:

March 1 to March 15 = 14 days

For longer periods, expressing duration as years, months, and days requires careful calendar math:

January 15, 2025 to March 10, 2026:

  • January 15 to January 15 = 1 year
  • January 15 to March 10 = 1 month (to February 15) + 23 days (to March 10)
  • Total: 1 year, 1 month, 23 days

Full DateTime Duration

Combining date and time differences gives the most precise duration:

January 1, 2026 at 8:30 AM to March 15, 2026 at 2:45 PM:

  • Days: 73 days
  • Time difference: 2:45 PM − 8:30 AM = 6 hours 15 minutes
  • Total: 73 days, 6 hours, 15 minutes
  • Or: 1,758 hours 15 minutes
  • Or: 105,495 minutes

Practical Uses

Project tracking. "The project started 47 days ago" helps teams understand pace and progress.

Fitness. Calculating exact duration of workouts, rest periods, and time between sessions.

Travel. Total journey time including layovers, ground transportation, and time zone changes.

Cooking. How long has the dough been rising? When did I put the roast in the oven?

Age calculation. Exactly how old is a baby or child in months and days?

Countdowns. Days until a wedding, graduation, retirement, or any milestone event.
