Uploading the Wrong Size Costs You Quality
Every social platform has optimal image dimensions. Upload an image that is too small and the platform stretches it — the result looks pixelated and unprofessional. Upload an image that is too large and the platform compresses it with its own algorithm — you lose control of quality. Upload an image with the wrong aspect ratio and the platform crops it, usually in an unflattering way.
This is the reference to check before creating or resizing images for any major platform.
| Image Type | Recommended Dimensions | Aspect Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 |
| Stories / Reels | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 |
| Profile photo | 320 × 320 px (displayed at 110 px) | 1:1 |
For feed posts, the 4:5 portrait ratio (1080 × 1350) takes up the most screen space and performs best for engagement. Square posts are the safe default if you want consistent appearance across all placements.
| Image Type | Recommended Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Profile photo | 170 × 170 px (displayed at 36 px on mobile) |
| Cover photo | 851 × 315 px |
| Feed post image | 1200 × 630 px |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 px |
| Event cover | 1920 × 1005 px |
| Ad image | 1200 × 628 px |
Facebook compresses images aggressively if they are too large. Upload at exactly the recommended dimensions for best results.
X (Twitter)
| Image Type | Recommended Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 px |
| Header image | 1500 × 500 px |
| In-tweet image | 1200 × 675 px (16:9) |
| Card image | 1200 × 628 px |
X crops profile photos to a circle, so keep important elements centered and away from the corners.
| Image Type | Recommended Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 px minimum |
| Cover photo | 1584 × 396 px |
| Company logo | 400 × 400 px |
| Company cover | 1128 × 191 px |
| Shared image post | 1200 × 627 px |
| Article cover image | 1920 × 1080 px |
LinkedIn's feed post image renders at approximately 552 × 289 px in the feed, but uploads at 1200 × 627 for retina display quality.
YouTube
| Image Type | Recommended Dimensions |

| Thumbnail | 1280 × 720 px (16:9) |
| Channel art | 2560 × 1440 px |
| Channel icon | 800 × 800 px |
| End screen | 1920 × 1080 px |
YouTube thumbnails display at various sizes depending on where they appear, but the 1280 × 720 source is the standard. Keep key text and faces in the center safe zone to avoid cropping on smaller displays.

How to Use the Toobits Image Resizer
Upload your image, enter the target width and/or height in pixels, and use the aspect ratio lock to maintain proportions. Download the resized image immediately. There is no upload to a server — all processing happens in your browser. Useful before uploading to any platform to ensure the dimensions are exactly right without relying on the platform's own cropping.
