What Is Lorem Ipsum and Why Do Designers Use Nonsense Text?

The 2,000-year-old origin of Lorem Ipsum, why placeholder text matters in design, and when to use it versus real content.

The Text That Has Been Confusing People for Decades

Open almost any design mockup, website template, or print layout created in the last 50 years, and you will likely find it: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." It is recognizable, oddly calming in its familiarity, and completely meaningless to most people who read it. Which is precisely the point.

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text — text used to fill space in a design before the real content is ready. Its use is so widespread that it has become the default in virtually every design tool, from Figma and Adobe XD to WordPress and Squarespace.

Where Lorem Ipsum Actually Comes From

The text is not random gibberish. It is a scrambled, altered excerpt from "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a work of philosophy by Marcus Tullius Cicero, written in 45 BC.

The original passage discusses the philosophy of pleasure and pain: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." which roughly translates to "Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain..."

The standard Lorem ipsum text is a corrupted version of this passage, with words rearranged and some removed so that it resembles Latin without making grammatical sense. This corruption happened gradually, likely during the era of early print typesetting in the 1500s. When Aldus Manutius (the inventor of italic type and the printing house behind the typefaces that became the Garamond family) popularized Lorem ipsum for typesetting samples, it spread across Europe and has never stopped.

It became the default placeholder for digital design when desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker included it in the 1980s. Every design tool has shipped with Lorem ipsum ever since.

Why Designers Use Placeholder Text

To separate design decisions from content decisions. When a layout is being evaluated, the question should be: does this layout work? Not: do I agree with this copy? Real content in a wireframe causes stakeholders to critique the words instead of the design. Placeholder text keeps the focus where it belongs.

To prevent premature content decisions. Seeing real (but incomplete) copy in a mockup often leads to approving layouts that are really just approval of whatever copy happened to be available. Placeholder text signals clearly: this is not final.

To test text rendering. Lorem ipsum contains a variety of letter forms and character combinations that reveal how a typeface handles common scenarios. Designers use it to evaluate whether a font choice looks good at different sizes and weights.

To fill realistic amounts of space. A layout needs text to know how much space it actually requires. A paragraph that says "header text goes here" does not reveal whether the layout works at 50 words or 200 words. Lorem ipsum fills the space naturally.

When Lorem Ipsum Is the Wrong Choice

Placeholder text becomes a problem when it stays in a design too long. The risk: stakeholders approve the layout, developers build it, and then real content arrives and breaks everything. A headline that was designed for 5 words may receive 15. A content block designed for one paragraph may receive four.

Best practice: use Lorem ipsum only in early-stage wireframes and low-fidelity mockups. Move to real or realistic content as soon as the layout direction is established. Content-first design — where the real words and data drive the layout rather than the other way around — produces more robust results.

Alternatives to Standard Lorem Ipsum

Several variations exist for specific purposes:

  • Hipster ipsum: trendy buzzwords and artisan terminology
  • Corporate ipsum: business jargon
  • Cupcake ipsum: food-themed placeholder text
  • Bacon ipsum: for designers who are hungry
  • Blind text generator: generates placeholder text in multiple languages

For international projects, using Lorem ipsum in a design that will eventually show Chinese, Arabic, or Thai text can mislead stakeholders about how the layout will actually look. Language-appropriate placeholder text is a better choice.
