How to Use the Tile Calculator

Enter the room dimensions in the first area panel. For a rectangular room, enter length and width. For an L-shaped room, switch to L-shaped mode and enter the total length, total width, and cutout dimensions. Select your tile size from the presets or enter a custom size. Set the grout joint width and waste percentage — 10% is standard, 15% for rooms with many cuts. Enter tiles per box (printed on the box label) and the calculator tells you exactly how many boxes to buy. Use multi-area to combine a bathroom floor and shower tray in one calculation.

About This Tool

A comprehensive tile calculator for tilers, builders, and homeowners. Supports 12 tile presets across floor, wall, and mosaic categories plus fully custom dimensions. Handles rectangular and L-shaped rooms with up to 3 separate areas combined. Calculates tiles per square metre based on tile face dimensions plus grout joint width, applies a configurable waste factor, computes box counts, and estimates cost. Metric and imperial units with live conversion.

The number of tiles per m² depends on the tile face size and grout joint. For a 600 × 600 mm tile with a 3 mm joint, each module is 603 × 603 mm = 363,609 mm², giving 2.75 tiles/m². For a 300 × 300 mm tile with 3 mm grout, that’s 303 × 303 = 91,809 mm², giving 10.89 tiles/m². The box count is total tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.

10% waste is standard for rectangular rooms in grid layout. Use 15% for L-shaped rooms, 20%+ for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Always keep spare tiles from the same batch — replacements years later often mismatch. Pair with the Paint Calculator for wall paint or the Brick Calculator for wall construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need for a 10 square metre floor?

It depends on tile size and grout. For a 600 × 600 mm tile with 3 mm grout, you need approximately 2.75 tiles/m², so 10 m² requires 28 base tiles plus 10% waste = 31 tiles. For 300 × 300 mm tiles, that’s 10.89 tiles/m², so 109 base + 11 waste = 120 tiles. Enter your dimensions above for a precise answer.

How do I calculate tiles for an L-shaped room?

Use L-shaped mode. Enter the overall length and width, then the cutout dimensions. The calculator subtracts the cutout area. For complex shapes with multiple cutouts, use multi-area mode to add rectangular sections that together cover your floor.

Should I order extra tiles?

Always. The waste factor covers cuts and breakage during installation, but keep 5–10% as spares. Tiles from the same batch have consistent colour — replacements from a different batch often show a visible mismatch.

How many tiles are in a standard box?

Varies by tile size. Large format (600 × 1200 mm) may be 2–3 per box. Standard 300 × 300 mm tiles are often 9–16 per box covering 0.9–1.4 m². The count is printed on the box label — enter it in the tiles per box field.
