How to Use the EXIF Data Viewer

Upload a photo by dragging it into the upload zone or clicking to browse. The tool reads all embedded metadata instantly and displays it in organized sections: camera and shot details, GPS location, image properties, color profile, XMP editorial data, and IPTC fields. Upload multiple photos to compare their metadata side by side. Click โ€œView all raw tagsโ€ for the complete unfiltered tag list, or download the full metadata as a JSON file.

About This Tool

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard for embedding metadata directly inside image files. Every photo taken by a digital camera or smartphone contains an EXIF block recording the technical conditions of the shot โ€” aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, and the exact timestamp. Many cameras also record GPS coordinates. This tool reads all EXIF, XMP, IPTC, and ICC metadata entirely in your browser using the exifr library โ€” no photo is ever sent to a server. Safe for personal, sensitive, or confidential images. To strip metadata entirely, simply change JPG to PNG โ€” most re-encodes drop EXIF unless preserved explicitly. Related: Image Compressor for reducing file sizes, Background Remover for removing photo backgrounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. This tool uses exifr, a JavaScript library that reads EXIF data entirely within your browser. Your photos are never transmitted to any server.

Why does my photo have no EXIF data?

Screenshots, images saved from the web, and photos shared via social media often have no EXIF. AI-generated images typically lack camera EXIF as well.

What is the difference between EXIF, XMP, and IPTC?

EXIF records camera settings at capture time. XMP stores editorial metadata from photo editors. IPTC contains journalistic metadata like captions and credits.

Can I remove EXIF from my photos?

Yes โ€” use the Strip EXIF button to re-encode the image without any metadata. This uses canvas re-encoding at 95% quality.

What formats are supported?

JPEG, TIFF, HEIC, WebP, PNG, and camera RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, RAF, DNG) are supported.
