How to Use the PDF Merger

Upload two or more PDF files by dragging them into the upload zone or clicking to browse. Review the page count and file size for each PDF. Drag files up or down, or use the arrow buttons, to set the order of the merged document. Click Merge PDFs to combine them into a single downloadable file with your chosen filename.

About This Tool

Merging PDFs is one of the most common document-management tasks โ€” combining invoices into a single monthly packet, assembling contract addenda, or collating scanned pages into one shareable file. This tool does it entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, which reads each source PDF, copies its pages page-by-page into a new document, and serves the result as a direct download. Your files never touch any server, which matters especially for PDFs because they often contain contracts, tax documents, medical records, and identity papers. Most online PDF mergers upload your files to remote servers, process them there, and send you back a download link โ€” Toobits keeps everything local so sensitive documents stay on your device. Pair with PDF to Text to extract text before merging, PDF to Images for the reverse workflow, or Image to PDF when starting from scanned pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server when I merge them?

No. The merge runs entirely in your browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. Each source PDF is read as a local file, its pages are copied into a new PDF document in your browserโ€™s memory, and the result is offered as a direct download. Your files never leave your device.

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

Up to 50 files per merge, with each individual file up to 100 MB. These limits protect your browser from running out of memory. In practice, merging 5โ€“20 typical PDFs is fast and comfortable on any modern device. Very large bundles may take 10โ€“30 seconds to process depending on your computer.

Can I reorder the PDFs before merging?

Yes. Drag any PDF in the list to reorder it. On keyboard-only devices, use the up and down arrow buttons on each file card. The merged PDF is generated in the order shown in the list, with the first file providing the first pages.

What if a PDF is password-protected?

Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged without the password. If you upload an encrypted file, you will see an inline error near that file and the merge will skip it while continuing with the others. Unlock the PDF first using your PDF viewerโ€™s Save As feature after entering the password, and re-upload.

Will the merged PDF preserve fonts, images, and form fields?

Yes. pdf-lib copies each pageโ€™s content stream verbatim, including embedded fonts, images, annotations, and form fields. The merged PDF is essentially a concatenation of the source documentsโ€™ pages with no re-rendering or quality loss.

Does the tool work offline?

Once the tool page has loaded, yes. The pdf-lib library is bundled with the page, so merging can continue even if your network disconnects. The first load requires an internet connection to download the page.

Can I remove specific pages or merge only selected pages from each PDF?

Not in this tool โ€” it merges full PDFs only. To remove pages or extract a range before merging, use a dedicated PDF editor first. This is a deliberate scope decision to keep the tool fast and simple.
